Eyabantu Ngabantu

Eyabantu Ngabantu (by the people, for the people) is based on the development philosophy of Asset-based Community Development (ABCD). It is about identifying a community’s skills, connections, ideas and rights, and building the confidence of community members to use these ‘assets’ towards coming up with their own sustainable development solutions.

WHAT IS AN ASSET? Many things can be identified and used as an ‘asset’ – for instance it is possible to identify skills, ideas, talents, leadership capabilities and other persona characteristics present in a community as assets. It is also important to consider how personal and social networks and institutions can be assets and to analyse the ‘social capital’ (or strength of supportive relationships) present within a community. Identifying physical and natural resources is a more common way to think about assets, but resources can also include financial, cultural and intellectual resources. Rights are also an asset – for instance, the rights promised to all South Africans under the South African Constitution can be used to lobby government and to hold them to account.

HOW DOES ECNGOC USE EYABANTU NGABANTU? Eyabantu Ngabantu recognizes that communities and other groups of people have accomplished significant development feats in the past, often working against great odds. Mostly, they have done this using their own devices, without the help of external advisers or development agencies. But sometimes external people can be useful to introduce new concepts or ideas, acting as a catalyst to stimulate and enhance the progression of Eyabantu Ngabantu.

THE FOUR Cs: ECNGOC works with its member organizations within a number of communities, introducing the concept of Eyabantu Ngabantu and acting as the catalyst that prompts people to view their situation in a different light. ECNGOC also helps build the confidence of people to pursue their development dreams on their own, sometimes also assisting by organising capacity-building opportunities in a particular area. An example is where ECNGOC has brought together a number of people from different communities to participate on a course on subjects such as Project Management or Advocacy. ECNGOC also assists communities to make connections, acting, for instance, as a link organization between projects and funders. These four C’s are at the core of ECNGOC’s Eyabantu Ngabantu work: Concepts, Capacity, Connections and Confidence.
