Gamechanger- Leadership Training

Gamechanger- Leadership Training (2017-2019)

The leadership training is a multi-stakeholder training program that the ECNGOC developed and implemented in partnership with the GIZ-Governance Support Programme (GSP). The training has been piloted at Raymond Mhlaba Municipality and at InxubaYethemba Municipality.

The interactive training course intends to develop leadership competencies with a specific focus on citizen engagement in the Integrated Development Planning (IDP) process. It targets participants within public (government) and private (businesses and civil society) sector, to increase their competencies in collectively addressing the complex international socio – economic challenges of our times, from the perspective of the Municipal level. Group work on protypes (mini projects) is applied throughout the sessions to put the learning into practice, foster collaboration and implement innovative projects.

The objective of the programme is to improve the quality of citizen engagement at partner municipalities by:

  • Enabling participants to gain soft and hard skills on modern leadership approaches through a longer-term explorative learning process. Influencing attitudes and mind sets.
  • Triggering reflection and critical discussions on current citizen engagement practices from government and citizens’ perspective. Providing exposure to innovative tools and approaches.
  • Grooming municipal change agents who are supportive of adjusting strategies and practices towards more meaningful citizen engagement.
  • Improving collaboration between different stakeholders on citizen engagement.

The governance reference group of the ECNGOC consisting of OTP, COGTA, SALGA, ECSECC and the University of Fort Hare made important contributions to the development of the training material and the facilitation of the training sessions.

Currently the ECNGOC is exploring opportunities to partner with government stakeholders to roll-out the program to further municipalities in the Eastern Cape.
